| The vg is succeptable to excessive rod bearing wear due to the narrow width. Its almost 30 % narrower than say the supra motor or the dsm motor. It simply cannot handle too much detonation. Vgs use tri metal bearings which are somewhat forgiving but ultimately softer than other bearings. Add to the fact that at the stage 3 + level we run almost 2 x boost as stock. Although we can't hear light knock it is still damaging the motor. As greg stated with new equipment it has come to light that what we considered an ok boost level is no longer ok. It used to be that 18 psi was fine on pump gas for medium sized turbos but after hearing thru knock sensor amplifiers it seems that there still is some knock even though its not audiable normally. Add to this that these cars are about 20 years old now and most of the components controlling af are now failing to some degree. I have fixed several fprs, dampners, fuel pump issues as of late. The crappy injectors do not help either. Pcv systems have crapped out, various rubber parts are dry rotted... Basically the cars are just too old. Sadly a lot of people buy these cars thinking they are a good bang for the buck and they can be hopped up cheaply. I think those days are gone now. These cars are at a point where they need to be restored completely to be reliable. Harry
